Lafayette is the Tippecanoe County seat, and because of that, the county clerk is located right in town. The office stays open until 6:30 PM on those days, which is helpful for couples who work daytime hours and cannot easily take time off. The standard fee is $25 for Indiana residents and $65 for out-of-state applicants. Both applicants must appear in person together.

Lafayette Marriage License Requirements
Indiana law is clear on the in-person requirement. Under IC 31-11-4-3, both applicants must appear at the clerk's office at the same time. There is no option to mail in an application or submit it through a representative. You both show up at 301 Main Street in Lafayette, present your IDs, give your Social Security numbers, and sign the application together.
Valid photo ID is required. The Tippecanoe County Clerk accepts a driver's license, U.S. passport, state-issued ID card, or military ID. A birth certificate can work, but it must be accompanied by a separate photo ID. Both people must provide their Social Security numbers. If either person has been married before, bring proof that the marriage ended. A divorce decree or a death certificate from a former spouse is what you need. The clerk will not issue a license without this documentation if it applies to your situation.
Under IC 31-11-1-4, you must be 18 or older to apply without parental involvement. If you are 16 or 17, a parent or guardian must appear with you and provide consent. Indiana does not allow anyone under 16 to marry.
Start the process at home by completing the Indiana online pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage. This is required under IC 31-11-4-1. Filling it out before you visit the Tippecanoe County Clerk makes your appointment at 301 Main Street faster and smoother. Use a computer, not a phone, when completing the form.
