New Albany Marriage License Requirements
Indiana law sets the rules for who can apply for a marriage license and what they must bring. Under IC 31-11-4-3, both people who plan to marry must appear together at the clerk's office. You cannot send one person alone or fill out forms ahead of time without both parties present in New Albany.
Each applicant must bring a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms of ID include a driver's license, state-issued ID card, U.S. passport, military ID, or a birth certificate combined with a photo ID. Your Social Security number is required as well. If you were married before, you need to show proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or a death certificate for a former spouse both qualify. The clerk's staff will check these documents when you come in to apply in New Albany.
Age matters. You must be at least 18 to apply without any extra steps. Applicants who are 16 or 17 years old can apply with parental consent under IC 31-11-1-4. There is no waiting period after you apply. The license is good for 60 days from the date it is issued, as set by IC 31-11-4-10. If you do not use the license within that window, it expires and you have to apply again.
Indiana does not require a blood test or any medical exam before marriage. There is no residency requirement either. People who live outside Indiana can get a license in New Albany as long as they plan to marry in the state.
Note: Indiana law under IC 31-11-4-1 requires the ceremony to take place within Indiana for a license issued here to be valid.

Marriage License Fees in New Albany
Floyd County charges $25.00 for Indiana residents who apply for a marriage license in New Albany. If one or both applicants live out of state, the fee is $65.00. These fees are set by the county and are subject to change, so call the clerk's office at (812) 948-5411 to confirm the current amount before your visit.
The fee covers the license itself. You get the document at the time of your visit. If you want certified copies for records purposes, ask the clerk's staff about copy fees when you apply. Floyd County also offers an online marriage license application through the clerk's website, which may allow you to start the process before appearing in person.
Indiana residents pay the lower fee regardless of where in the state they live. The out-of-state rate of $65.00 applies when neither applicant has Indiana residency. Bring cash or check with you, and confirm accepted payment methods with the clerk before your visit.

The Indiana Department of Health through VitalChek handles certified copies of marriage certificates as well, though that is a different document from the license itself.

After Your Marriage License is Issued
Once you have your New Albany marriage license, you have 60 days to hold your ceremony anywhere in Indiana. The person who performs the ceremony must be authorized under IC 31-11-6-1, which covers clergy, judges, and other officiants. After the ceremony, the officiant fills out and signs the license. The completed license goes back to the Floyd County Clerk to be recorded.
Once it is recorded, the marriage becomes part of the official public record in Floyd County. You can request a certified copy of your marriage certificate from the Indiana Department of Health vital records office at that point. Certified copies are often needed for name changes, passport applications, and other legal matters. The ISDH processes these requests and you can also order through VitalChek for faster turnaround.
Under IC 31-11-11-1, a marriage in Indiana is valid once performed by an authorized officiant and recorded. If something goes wrong with the application or filing, the clerk's office in New Albany can help sort it out.
