Martin County Marriage License Requirements

Martin County collects more information on the marriage license application than many other Indiana counties. You still need the standard documents, but there are additional fields you should prepare for before your visit. Read through everything below so your trip to Shoals goes smoothly.

Both applicants must be at least 18 years old under IC 31-11-1-4. Martin County allows applicants who are 17 with parental consent. If either person is a minor, both parents or the custodial parent must come to the clerk's office to sign consent. That parent or guardian must bring their own ID as well.

Valid ID is required for all applicants. Martin County accepts a driver's license, state ID card, birth certificate, passport, or military ID. You also need to provide your Social Security number. The clerk also asks for each applicant's parents' current addresses, parents' maiden names, and each parent's state of birth. In addition, if you have children, you need to provide each child's full name and birth date.

If you were previously married, you must give the date that marriage ended. Bring documentation to confirm this. Under IC 31-11-4-1, prior marriage termination is a required disclosure. The license is valid for 60 days under IC 31-11-4-10 and must be filed within 30 days of the ceremony per IC 31-11-4-18.

Note: Both applicants must appear together in person per IC 31-11-4-3. There is no waiting period, so you can marry the same day you get the license.

Martin County Marriage License Fees

Martin County charges $29.00 for Indiana residents and $69.00 for out-of-state couples. This is slightly higher than the base Indiana fee, which reflects a local documentation surcharge. Fee structures are anchored by state statute under IC 31-11-4-11, with counties allowed to add small amounts for documentation costs.

Pay when you apply at the clerk's office. Certified copies of the Martin County marriage license are available for a small fee and are useful for name changes and legal updates after the wedding.
