Getting a Marriage License in Porter County

Both applicants must appear at the Porter County Clerk's office together. This is not a step you can skip or work around. Under IC 31-11-4-3, both parties must personally appear before the clerk. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID. Each applicant must also provide their Social Security number. The clerk uses this information to complete the license and file it correctly.

There is no waiting period in Indiana. You can hold the ceremony the same day you receive the license. The license is valid for 60 days from the date of issue under IC 31-11-4-10. If you don't use it within 60 days, you have to apply again and pay the fee again. No blood test is required. Applicants must be at least 18 under IC 31-11-1-4. Those who are 16 or 17 can apply with parental or guardian consent in person.

If either applicant was married before, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of the prior spouse is required. A plain photocopy of these documents may not be accepted. Bring the certified version to avoid having to make a second trip to Valparaiso.

The Indiana Courts pre-application tool at courts.in.gov/marriage allows you to complete your information online before visiting the Porter County Clerk. This saves time at the office window and is available for free to all Indiana applicants.

Note: The license is valid in any Indiana county, so you can marry in Portage, Chesterton, or anywhere else in the state with a Porter County license.

Porter County Marriage License Fees

Porter County charges $25.00 for Indiana residents and $65.00 for out-of-state applicants. These are standard state-level fees for many Indiana counties. Pay when you pick up the license. Contact the clerk's office to find out which forms of payment are accepted before you go.

Certified copies of the marriage record are available after the ceremony has been completed and the license has been returned and recorded. Certified copies are needed for name changes and other legal updates. The clerk can tell you the current fee for copies when you call or visit the Porter County Courthouse in Valparaiso.

Note: Out-of-state applicants are anyone who lives outside Indiana, even if you work or spend significant time in the state.

Under IC 31-11-6-1, the Porter County marriage record becomes a permanent public document once filed.

Officiants must be legally authorized to perform marriages in Indiana. Requirements are outlined under IC 31-11-11-1. Judges, licensed ministers, and other authorized officials qualify. If your chosen officiant is ordained through an online service, confirm their legal status before the wedding. Problems with the officiant's credentials can affect whether the marriage is legally valid in Indiana.
