Applying for a Spencer County Marriage License

Spencer County recommends calling ahead to set an appointment before you visit. Once you have arranged your visit, both applicants must go to the Rockport courthouse together at the same time. Under IC 31-11-4-3, both parties must appear in person before the clerk. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license, passport, state ID card, or military ID all qualify. Both applicants must also provide their Social Security numbers.

Indiana has no waiting period. You can hold your ceremony on the same day you receive the Spencer County marriage license. The license is valid for 60 days under IC 31-11-4-10. No blood test is required in Indiana. The minimum age without parental consent is 18 under IC 31-11-1-4. Applicants who are 16 or 17 must have a parent or legal guardian come with them to the clerk's office in Rockport.

If either applicant was previously married, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of the prior spouse is required. Plain photocopies are not typically accepted. Bring the official certified versions to avoid problems. Because Spencer County suggests appointments, it is especially worth calling ahead if you have a complex situation with prior marriages or unusual ID.

Note: Contact the Spencer County Clerk at (812) 649-6028 to confirm appointment availability before driving to Rockport.
