How to Get a Switzerland County Marriage License
Both people getting married must appear at the Switzerland County Clerk's office in Vevay at the same time. You cannot apply for someone else or send paperwork ahead. Under IC 31-11-4-3, joint in-person appearance is required by Indiana law. The office is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Indiana has no waiting period between applying and getting married. Your Switzerland County marriage license is good as soon as the clerk issues it. Under IC 31-11-4-10, it stays valid for 60 days. If your wedding is more than 60 days away, wait until you get closer to the date. An expired license is no good, and you would need to apply and pay again.
The Indiana Courts website has a pre-application tool at courts.in.gov/marriage. You can fill in some basic information before your visit to Vevay. This helps the clerk process your application faster. Still, both people must be present in person to complete the process and pay the fee.
No blood test is needed. There is no residency requirement for Switzerland County. You can apply there even if you live in another county or state, though the fee is higher for out-of-state residents. Your license works anywhere in Indiana.
Note: Switzerland County is one of Indiana's smaller counties. The clerk's office may have limited staff. Call ahead if you need to confirm availability on a specific day.
What to Bring to the Switzerland County Clerk
Each applicant must bring a valid photo ID. Indiana accepts driver's licenses, state IDs, passports, and military IDs. If you bring a birth certificate as your ID, also bring a photo ID. Your Social Security number is required on the application under IC 31-11-4-1. The physical card is not needed, but you must know the number.
If either person was previously married, the prior marriage must have legally ended. Bring a certified copy of your divorce decree or a death certificate. The Switzerland County Clerk will review it. Without this document, the clerk cannot issue a new marriage license. Age rules under IC 31-11-1-4 require applicants to be 18 or older. Those who are 16 or 17 need a parent or guardian present and must provide written consent. No marriage license will be issued to anyone under 16 in Indiana.
Documents to bring:
- Valid government photo ID for each applicant
- Social Security number for each applicant
- Divorce decree or death certificate if previously married
- Parental consent documentation if either applicant is under 18
- Payment for the fee ($25 residents, $65 out-of-state)
