Lawrence Marriage License Requirements
Indiana law requires both people planning to marry to appear in person at the Marion County Clerk's office. This is set by IC 31-11-4-3. You cannot send a representative or mail in documents. Both of you go to the City-County Building together, present your IDs, give your Social Security numbers, and sign the application at the counter.
You need a valid government-issued photo ID. The Marion County Clerk accepts a driver's license, U.S. passport, state ID, or military ID. A birth certificate can be used alongside a separate photo ID. Both applicants must provide their Social Security numbers at the time of application. If either of you was previously married, you must bring documentation that the prior marriage ended. That means a certified divorce decree if you divorced, or a death certificate if your former spouse passed away. Come prepared with the original or certified copy, not a photocopy.
Age requirements under IC 31-11-1-4 set 18 as the minimum age to marry without parental consent. Those between 16 and 17 must have a parent or legal guardian present at the clerk's office to give in-person consent. No one under 16 may marry in Indiana.
Before going to downtown Indianapolis, complete the state's online pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage. This is required by IC 31-11-4-1. Doing this from home before your visit saves time at the office. Use a laptop or desktop rather than a phone for the form.
