Applying for a Marriage License in Marion County

Marion County follows Indiana's standard marriage license application process. Both parties must appear in person together at the City-County Building under IC 31-11-4-3. No appointment is needed. You go to Window W122 on the first floor. The clerk's office is set up for walk-in service.

Before your visit, you can complete the online pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage. This does not replace your in-person visit, but it may reduce the time you spend at the counter. The Marion County Clerk also has digital records and an online marriage record search, so some information is accessible before or after your visit.

Each applicant needs valid, unexpired identification. A driver's license, state ID, birth certificate, or passport all qualify. Proof of residency is also required. Your Social Security number must be provided on the application. If you were married before, bring documentation of when that marriage ended. This can be a certified divorce decree or a death certificate. Under IC 31-11-4-1, these requirements apply to all Indiana couples.

The marriage license is valid for 60 days under IC 31-11-4-10. After the ceremony, the officiant must file the signed license within 30 days per IC 31-11-4-18. The clerk notes that licenses issued before 1990 may take 24 to 48 hours to locate due to the ongoing digitization project.

Note: Marion County accepts cash or credit/debit card. A processing fee applies for card payments.

Marion County Marriage License Fees

Indiana residents pay $25.00 for a Marion County marriage license. Out-of-state couples pay $65.00. Certified copies cost $4.00 each. These fees are set by Indiana statute under IC 31-11-4-11. If you pay by credit or debit card, a processing fee will be added. Cash avoids that extra charge.

Certified copies of the Marion County marriage license serve many practical purposes after the wedding. You need them to change your name on a driver's license, Social Security card, passport, and bank accounts. The clerk's office issues copies at the time of your application or after the signed license is returned. You can also order Indiana vital records copies through VitalChek at vitalchek.com or through the Indiana Department of Health at in.gov/health/vital-records/marriages/.

The Indiana Marriage License Public Lookup at public.courts.in.gov/MLPL is free to use and covers records from 1993 to present across all Indiana counties, including Marion County. You can search by name. Results show the license date and county. This is a good starting point for confirming that a marriage license was issued.

Older Marion County marriage records, especially those from before 1990, may take additional time to retrieve due to the clerk's ongoing digitization project that began in August 2024. For historical records, the Indiana State Library's digital archive at digital.statelib.lib.in.us/legacy/ may have older filings indexed. The Marion County Clerk's records facility at 1330 Madison Avenue handles in-person records requests. Call (317) 327-4715 for records, or email marriage@indy.gov for marriage-specific inquiries.

Who Can Perform a Marriage in Marion County

Indiana law under IC 31-11-6-1 lists who may legally solemnize a marriage. The list includes clergy from recognized religious organizations, judges, mayors (within their county), city or town clerks or clerk-treasurers, the governor and lieutenant governor, and members of the Indiana General Assembly. Certified secular organizations may also have authorized officiants.

Indianapolis, as the consolidated city-county seat, has many clergy and civil officials who can perform ceremonies. If you plan to use someone not on the list above, verify their eligibility with the Marion County Clerk before the ceremony. An improperly performed ceremony can affect the legal record. The signed license must be returned to the Marion County Clerk's office within 30 days of the ceremony. If the officiant fails to return the license, you may need to take additional steps to get the marriage recorded properly.

Age requirements for marriage in Indiana are set by IC 31-11-1-4. Both people must be at least 18. Those who are 16 or 17 may apply with parental consent. The Marion County Clerk can walk you through the process if either party is a minor.
