How to Apply in Huntington County

Both applicants must appear together at the Huntington County Clerk's Office. Indiana Code IC 31-11-4-3 is clear on this: both people must be present at the same time. The clerk will not process an application from one person alone, regardless of the reason. Schedule your appointment so both of you can attend at the same time.

Before your appointment, use the online pre-application starter at courts.in.gov/marriage. This Indiana Judicial Branch tool lets you enter information ahead of time so the clerk can process your application faster. Huntington County does accept online application starters, and using one can reduce the time you spend at the window on the day of your appointment.

Huntington County is one of the few Indiana counties that notes you can be married the same day the license is issued. There is no waiting period under Indiana law, and the county explicitly confirms this. Once you receive your Huntington County marriage license, you can use it that same day or any day within the 60-day validity window established under IC 31-11-4-10.

Huntington County Marriage License Requirements

The Huntington County Clerk requires valid identification from both applicants. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state-issued ID, passport, or birth certificate. You must also know your Social Security Number. You do not need the card, but you need the number. The clerk records it on the application as required by Indiana law.

Huntington County also requires parent information for both applicants. You will need the full name, address, and birthplace of each parent. Some applicants are caught off guard by this requirement. Know your parents' information before you go, including their full legal names and where they were born. This applies even if your parents are deceased. If you genuinely do not know this information, contact the clerk's office at (260) 358-4817 in advance to ask how they handle such situations.

If either applicant has been married before, the date that prior marriage ended must be provided. A divorce decree or death certificate will be requested. The Huntington County Clerk follows IC 31-11-4-1, which requires applicants to affirm no prior marriage is still in effect. Both applicants must also be at least 18 under IC 31-11-1-4, though 16 and 17-year-olds may apply with parental consent. Under IC 31-11-4-18, both parties affirm there is no legal reason they cannot marry.

Huntington County Marriage License Fees

Out-of-state residents pay $65.00 plus the $1.00 document fee, for a total of $66.00. These fees are current as of the time of this writing, but call (260) 358-4817 to confirm before your appointment since fees can change.

If you want a judge or court official to officiate, contact the clerk's office at (260) 358-4817 to inquire about scheduling and any associated fees for that service.
