Applying for a Hendricks County Marriage License
Both applicants must appear together at the Hendricks County Clerk's Office to get a marriage license. This is a firm requirement under Indiana Code IC 31-11-4-3. There are no exceptions for work schedules, distance, or other personal reasons. Both people must be physically present at the same time.
Before your visit, complete the online pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage. This is run by the Indiana Judicial Branch and speeds up the clerk's process once you arrive. You enter your personal information, prior marriage history if applicable, and parent information. The clerk will then verify your documents against what you submitted online. It does not replace the in-person appointment, but it makes the visit go faster.
When you arrive, bring your valid ID. A driver's license or state-issued ID is the standard. Both applicants need to have valid identification. The clerk will review your IDs, confirm your Social Security Numbers, and issue the license once everything checks out. You can get married the same day. Indiana has no waiting period between issuance and the ceremony. Under IC 31-11-4-10, the Hendricks County marriage license is good for 60 days from issue date.
Requirements for a Hendricks County Marriage License
Indiana Code IC 31-11-1-4 sets the minimum age for marriage at 18 without parental consent. Applicants who are 16 or 17 need written parental consent. Below age 16, Indiana requires a court order. Hendricks County follows this state standard without exception.
You will need to provide your Social Security Number when you apply at the Hendricks County Clerk's Office. You do not need to bring the card itself, just know the number. If either applicant has been previously married, you must provide the date the prior marriage ended. Bring documentation to back this up. A certified copy of the divorce decree works, as does a death certificate if your previous spouse has passed. This is required under IC 31-11-4-1, which governs eligibility to marry in Indiana.
The Hendricks County Clerk's Office also notes specific prohibited items for courthouse entry. This is a security matter rather than a marriage license requirement, but it is worth knowing. Leave large bags and unnecessary items at home or in your car. The West Security Entrance is the only way in, and security staff will screen everyone who enters the building.
Hendricks County Marriage License Fees
Indiana residents pay $25.00 for a Hendricks County marriage license. If neither applicant lives in Indiana, the fee is $65.00. The out-of-state rate applies when both applicants have addresses outside of Indiana. If at least one person lives in Indiana, the resident rate applies. Payment methods vary by office, so call (317) 745-9231 to confirm whether the clerk accepts cash, check, credit, or debit.
Certified copies of the marriage license are available at an additional cost. You may want to get a few certified copies at the time of application. They are useful for name change requests with the Social Security Administration, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, your employer's benefits department, and financial institutions. Having multiple certified copies on hand avoids the hassle of returning to the Hendricks County Clerk's Office for more later.
Note: Credit card payments may carry a small convenience fee. Ask the clerk about any additional charges before your visit so you know exactly how much to bring.
