How to Apply for a Tipton County Marriage License
Both applicants must appear at the Tipton County Clerk's office at the same time. Indiana law under IC 31-11-4-3 requires this. You cannot apply by proxy, by mail, or online. Plan a weekday when both of you are free from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The clerk's office in Tipton will process your application, review your documents, and collect the fee.
Indiana has no waiting period after you receive your Tipton County marriage license. You can use it for a ceremony on the same day it is issued. Under IC 31-11-4-10, the license is valid for 60 days from issue. Do not apply too early. If the wedding is more than two months out, wait so the license doesn't expire first.
Indiana Courts offers a pre-application tool at courts.in.gov/marriage. Filling it out before your trip to the Tipton courthouse can shorten your time there. Both people still need to appear in person to finish the process and pay.
No blood test is required anywhere in Indiana. Tipton County has no local residency requirement. You can apply there even if you live in another county, and the license is valid for ceremonies anywhere in the state.
Documents to Bring to the Tipton County Clerk
Each person applying must bring valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. A birth certificate combined with a separate photo ID also works. The name on your ID should match what you write on the application. Social Security numbers are required on the application under IC 31-11-4-1. The physical card is not required, just the number.
Prior marriages must be legally ended. If either person has been married before, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. The Tipton County Clerk will check this before issuing your license. Under IC 31-11-1-4, applicants must be at least 18. If you are 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must come with you to the Tipton County Clerk's office and give written consent. No one under 16 may receive a marriage license in Indiana.
Note: Having all your documents organized before your visit to the Tipton County Clerk saves time. A missing document means you have to come back another day.
