How to Apply for a Vigo County Marriage License
Applying for a Vigo County marriage license starts with a phone call. Reach the clerk's office at (812) 462-3211 to schedule an appointment. Both people who plan to marry must attend together. Indiana law under IC 31-11-4-3 requires joint in-person appearance. You cannot apply by mail, send a representative, or complete the process online.
Indiana has no waiting period. Once you complete your appointment and the Vigo County Clerk issues the license, you can use it the same day if needed. Under IC 31-11-4-10, the license is valid for 60 days. Time your appointment so the wedding falls before the 60-day window closes. An expired license cannot be used, and you would need to go through the whole process again.
The Indiana Courts pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage lets you fill out some details ahead of your appointment in Terre Haute. This can help move things along faster when you arrive. Both people still need to appear in person for the clerk to process the application.
No blood test is required. There is no residency requirement for Vigo County. The license is valid anywhere in Indiana. Terre Haute is a larger city, and the clerk's office handles more applications than rural counties, but appointments are still required so plan ahead.
Note: The Vigo County Clerk's appointment window ends at 3:00 PM, earlier than many other Indiana county offices. Plan your appointment well before that cutoff.
What to Bring to Your Vigo County Clerk Appointment
Each applicant must bring valid government-issued photo ID. Indiana accepts driver's licenses, state IDs, passports, and military IDs. A birth certificate combined with a separate photo ID also works. Both people need to provide their Social Security numbers on the application under IC 31-11-4-1. The card itself is not needed, just the number.
If either person was previously married, the prior marriage must be legally ended. Bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. The Vigo County Clerk will check this document. Under IC 31-11-1-4, each applicant must be at least 18. Those who are 16 or 17 need a parent or legal guardian at the appointment who provides written consent. Indiana does not issue marriage licenses to anyone under 16.
