How to Apply for a Whitley County Marriage License

Both people getting married must appear at the Whitley County Clerk's office in Columbia City at the same time. Indiana requires joint in-person appearance under IC 31-11-4-3. You cannot apply by mail or online. Plan a weekday when both of you are free to visit 101 W Van Buren St in Columbia City. Avoid the noon to 1:00 PM lunch closure when planning your visit.

Indiana has no waiting period. The Whitley County Clerk issues the marriage license during your visit, and you can use it right away. Under IC 31-11-4-10, the license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. Plan the timing carefully. If the wedding is more than 60 days after your application, the license will expire. You would then need to reapply and pay the $29 fee again.

The Indiana Courts pre-application at courts.in.gov/marriage lets you fill out some information before going to the Columbia City courthouse. This can reduce the time spent at the clerk's office. Both applicants still need to appear together in person and pay at the time of the visit.

No blood test is required. There is no residency requirement for Whitley County. You can apply there even if you live in a bordering county. The license is valid for ceremonies anywhere in Indiana once issued.

Note: Whitley County borders Allen County, where Fort Wayne is located. If you live in a growing suburban area near the county line, make sure you know which county your address falls in before going to the Columbia City clerk's office.

What to Bring to the Whitley County Clerk

Each applicant must bring valid government-issued photo ID. Indiana accepts driver's licenses, state IDs, passports, and military IDs. A birth certificate combined with a photo ID also works. Both people must provide their Social Security numbers on the application under IC 31-11-4-1. The physical Social Security card is not needed, just the number.

If either person was previously married, that prior marriage must be legally ended. Bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate. The Whitley County Clerk will review this before issuing the license. Under IC 31-11-1-4, both applicants must be 18 or older. Those who are 16 or 17 need a parent or legal guardian present to provide written consent. Indiana does not issue marriage licenses to anyone under 16. Have everything organized before you drive to Columbia City. A missing document means another trip back.
